The team at Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai have, over the last few years, acquired a reputation for imaginative and unusual prizes for the winning connections of their sponsored races. These have included paintings, ceramics, metal sculptures and even ready-to-plant trees.

For several years now Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai have sponsored the Gimcrack Stakes at York. The winning connections get a small example of an artists work on the day, and then work together with the chosen artist to create a bespoke portrait of the winning horse, to be awarded to them at the Gimcrack Dinner at York in December.

I have been honoured and privileged to be asked to provide this trophy 3 times now, and this year was asked to paint the race finish, showing Lake Forest winning well for William Haggas.

I am extremely grateful to Mr Malih Al Basti, and his UK representative Michael O’ Hagan, for their support in the past, and for entrusting me with this commission once again.

I enjoyed painting the exiting finish, and I hope it will remind the owners of their important win that day.
