Glenn Roeder Race Day

The painting in its frame

I was pleased to be asked to contribute to a charity fundraiser to be held at the July Course, Newmarket on 23rd July ,2022.  Staged  to celebrate the life of the late Glenn Roeder, the charity race day aims to raise a significant sum for The Brain Tumour Charity, a charity close to the Roeder family’s heart, as it was a brain tumour that ended Glenn’s life.

Glenn was a professional footballer, playing for teams including Newcastle and Q.P.R, before turning to management and having great success as manager of teams including  Newcastle United and West Ham. In 2004, he collapsed after  a match, and was rushed to hospital where a brain tumour was eventually  diagnosed. He underwent surgery, and battled bravely through many rounds of treatment, until the disease finally claimed him in February last year.

The whole family are behind the race day, but Holly Roeder, who also works in racing, is the main organiser, day to day.

They have asked me for a painting to auction after the lunch at the racecourse. As the meeting is to be held at the July course, I painted a scene of one of my favourite places there, the Pre-Parade Ring.

Called  ‘Under the Trees’, it’s 50 x 40 cm , oil on canvas, and in a really lovely frame. (see photos)
